i figured you must be from LA to mention Ben Milstein, AnON and Deru. Did you catch the 'Minor Adjustments' show in LA last May?

it's always hard for me to make lists like this, 'cause my favorites are constantly changing, and i like a lot of different styles - but here goes my current favorite albums . . .

    Plaid - Spores
    Deru - Pushing Air
Delarosa and Asora - Agony Pt. 1
    Phoenecia - Brown Out
a Grape Dope - Missing Dragons
Mice Parade - Mokoondi (not exactly idm but . . .)
    ndCv - unknown title
    Pole - #3 (and #1)
Aphex Twin - I care because you do
    Tortoise - TNT

    it's hard to think sometimes . . .

Sure, Sure... lost in LA. I fugure we are kinda spoiled out here in Cali overall. In many ways.

Shit the first time i heard Ben i was blown away. Then i saw that he not only created his owns sounds as opposed to sampling and comes from a diverse musical background. if you ever see him... ask him to ... well i can't expose him... you'll have to ask him. And as for Deru... that kid is just Dope. Bringing me back to Hip-Hop days and all. Glad to see both of them making it!

It's funny, but i thought i would get shit for Floyd.

I don't think Ben keeps his Super Collider use much of a secret. He told me right off the bat when I asked him after he finished a set. Lots of folks like that stuff. It's still a bit much coding for me but...it works for Ben. Why the hush hush? It's not at all about rockstars and secret switches, it's about individual creativity. So what if somebody uses the same tool? Are they gonna get famous using your licks, and making you starve? Doubtful. Immitation is often the highest form of flattery. ;)

Wahoo Super collider. Its not really that big of a deal.
If you can effectivly use super collider you are good anyway.
For those who don't know super collider is a synth programming language. you can have as many oscilator, filters, LFO's, FX, and modulation routes as you want and guess what...
          ITS FREE!!!!!!!!!!!

Casino vs Japan (Beautiful, beautiful melodic stuff)
David Kristian (If you like Boards of Canada you should check him out, he did that sound way before.. also does some crazy beat driven stuff)
Boards of Canada (of course, but sooo hypnotic)
Solvent vs Lowfish (technopop snow robot music)
    Ulrich Schnauss (beautiful music)
Proem (really the only glitchy type stuff I like a lot)
    Jega (of course heh)

    Coil
    Gridlock
(not really considered IDM... I guess more experimental industrial.. but amazing nonetheless)

Not that I don't like Aphex Twin and the like... I just think there are artists out there doing new and great things that deserve to be mentioned... aphex twin is already famous, and I love new and different stuff heh.

      Hmmm....

      Nommo Ogo
      TOPAAPOGWAII
      Dribble Mouth
      Aneurysm
      Timeblind
      Carl G
      Otto
      Pucca
      Dimentia

Yup, almost all of these cats are my homies, and they are all bad ass. If you don't know about them then you need to. Adri is right about folks needing mention, cuz there are a TON of cats doing cool stuff that almost nobody knows about. Let's keep it in perspective and also mention that there are a thousand times that doing shit that doesn't need mentioning, some of those even being big names.

        Hey Ooogie,

I see that you live in Emeryville (a bit north of where I live in Santa Cruz). Do your homies play live there at all?
Do they ever do gigs in the greater bay area or, god forbid, the south bay? and, lastly, are they part of a cooperative or are they all rugged individualists.

I'd like to find out more about relatively local IDM artists.
I'd love to know if they websites, mailing lists, et. al.

  • Re: Favorite Artists? Just some of my tops...

    Wed, November 19, 2003 - 11:11 AM
I'm not gonna go so far as to say favorite, as my tastes and moods change too rapidly for such an empirical statement!

So here's some of my current top spins:

AtomTM - So many names and styles, and almost all of them divine!

Bisk - Abstract, sample-happy, and ADD friendly! ;) Never lets anything get too repetetive.

Super_Collider - Digital funk & soul done right!

Rip-Off Artist - Another cross-genre bit-masher. I'm much fonder of his less techy stuff, like The Kids are Alright and In Through the Out Door, tho all of it is good.

Coil - IDM or not, they still have the most space on my shelves.

Eight Frozen Modules - Another ADD friendly choice...just when something is about to get old...*presto chango*

I've only heard the 'From Such Great Heights' ep. I liked it, but it was so poppy that I didn't run out and get the album. There's a version of the title track by Iron and Wine on there that's the best song ever, though.

I like the Ben Gibbard colab track on the Dntl album.

do you like 'em? How's the album?

it's fantastic... you should run out and buy the album :)
it is a bit on the poppy side, but the melodies, the beats, and the lyrics are fantastic. it's one of my favorite albums. highly, highly recommended.

Yesss... monolake! i love you for mentioning this one. I missed it on many people's list.

Has anyone mentioned Plastikman? I know he is thought of as
techno, but his Consumed CD I think is just a beautiful
and completely zen minimalist abstract offing.

Ooops, it has the dread four on the floor, but it is so thougth provoking to me that it doesn't bug me like most
techno/house/blah blah woof woof club music.

Not crazy about his latest though.
